A Multi-Data Geospatial Approach for Understanding Flood Risk in the Coastal Plains of Tamil Nadu, India

The coastal plains of Tamil Nadu, India, are prone to floods, the most common disaster experienced in this region almost every year. This research aims identify flood risks plain delineated through a watershed approach with 5020 micro-administrative units covering an area about 26,000 sq. km. A comprehensive risk assessment hazard, vulnerability, and exposure parameters was carried out using multiple datasets derived from field surveys, satellite data, secondary data sources. hazard layer prepared on probability scale (0–1) help Sentinel-1 Synthetic Aperture Radar coupled GIS-based water rise modelling Shuttle Topography Mission Digital Elevation Model (SRTM-DEM) reports District Disaster Management Plans 13 districts. In addition, National Resources Conservation Service-Curve Number (NRCS-CN) method adopted estimate surface runoff potential for identifying low flood-prone regions. vulnerability population hazards were determined census household data-based indicators. different categories built-up areas intersected elements at risk.
